Home > Membrane Switch Definition and Category

Membrane switch is an operator interface between user and equipment. It is a reliable front panel solution where environmental concerns or frequent cleanings are an issue. Because of these advantages, membrane switch is widely used in medical device, industrial control, home electronics, and precise instrument industries etc.

TEXTURE
Membrane switch usually covered with a graphic overlay. Select different material or print texture will achieve different finish. Graphic overlay can achieve matt or glossy finish surface.

TACTILE
Membrane switch include tactile type and non-tactile type.

A. Tactile switch

provides a momentary “snap” when depressed to provide operator a feedback. Metal-dome or poly-dome options all can achieve tactile type. Metal-dome is a very common tactile device. It can achieve very good physical tactile response when pressed. Poly-dome is an alternative to metal dome. It is produced by permanently forming top-circuit layer or overlay.

B.Non-tactile type

has no embossing or forming. There isn’t physical feedback when depressed. But, it is more durable and can be applied on curved surface.

 INDICATOR
Indicator is frequently seen in many devices. For membrane switch, there are 2 types of indicator, LED and Electro Luminescent Backlighting. Electro Luminescent Backlighting usually used in some special cases which need backlighting. Because of reliability and long life, LED has become the most common indicator solution for membrane switch now.

SHIELDING
Electronic equipment need be protected from unanticipated behavior caused by RFI. We can offer membrane switch with shielding layer if needed.

CIRCUIT
Membrane switch circuit are usually made by printed PET circuit. It can also be made by PCB or FPC if needed.
